It would be hard to find any politically savvy person either Republican or Democrat without some grievance against FBI Director James Comey. Many are relieved Trump terminated Comey’s reign of dysfunction. His behavior was erratic causing many sleepless nights during the election. Will Hillary be indicted? Don’t worry, we were led to believe, Comey is an honorable guy. Turns out he was nothing of the kind. When the dignity of the FBI, the nation’s prime federal law enforcement agency is impugned by a Director who has lost his moral compass, he has to go!
His problems: he inserted himself politically, violated FBI protocol and didn’t do a good job.
Did you know Comey was well briefed on the background of Orlando nightclub shooter, Omar Mateen, who was somehow working for a security company that served the Department of Homeland Security? Mateen was interviewed three times by the FBI for suspected problems. Then later, the FBI was given advanced warning about a potential east coast Florida terror attack. The warning signs apparent and missed. Forty-nine died in that night club. How did Mateen go undetected? The San Bernardino terror attack was also investigated by the FBI. A more vigilant FBI director not tethered to Obama’s politically correct notion of radical Islam, might have stopped one attack if not both.
Comey’s actions stretched beyond the prescribed behavior of a sitting FBI Director. His description of Hillary’s use of her home brewed email server established felonious behavior but ended incongruously with a pass that would have landed any one of us in prison. He presented the compelling evidence and shockingly rendered his judgment that Hillary would not be indicted. He exceeded his bounds, stepped over Loretta Lynch and told us that no reasonable prosecutor would take the case.
No one believed that because it wasn’t true. Comey demeaned his reputation on that day.
As Victor David Hanson points out, “It was not Comey’s job to interpret the law; that job belongs to lawyers in the National Security Division of Main Justice.”
Comey annointed himself judge, jury, and exonerator. And he supported a two tiered justice system: one for regular folks, the other for the elite. It was patently unfair and everyone knew it.
We know he never questioned Hillary Clinton under oath or recorded the interview. There was no grand jury. Evidence was destroyed in the interests of honoring immunity agreements. He rendered a get-out-of-jail pass in solidarity with the Democrats.
It didn’t stop Hillary from later blaming Comey for her presidential loss when he reopened the investigation just before the election, another erratic act.
Had Comey acted honorably Hillary might have been outed as the nominee. Her inability to inspire many Americans helped Trump win the election but that was solely by virtue of her unappealing candidacy. That’s the heart of the matter and the truth Democrats choose to deny.
We should be grateful those in flyover country got Obama and Hillary. The bi-coastal non-thinking ‘elite’ who had Orwell’s ‘doublethink’ down pat, didn’t.
Make no mistake, had Hillary Clinton been elected, America would have been replaced by a totalitarian regime. She was a perfect fit for government corruption and systemic criminality. We dodged a formidable bullet.
Once the election fracas passed Comey bumped things up when he confirmed that the U.S. intelligence community believed Russia helped Trump win the presidency. He injected life into a progressive political ploy that sought to delegitimize Trump’s win with no conclusive evidence to back it up.
Few bothered to ask why Putin would show a preference for Trump? Obama and Hillary were hardly formidable opponents.
At the same time Comey refused to investigate the far stronger evidence of unmasking and leaking to the press that destroyed citizen privacy and led to Obama’s campaign to hype the Russian threat. Calculated leaks created the Russian brouhaha and the current investigations of Gen. Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort and Carter Page.
It was easy to presume Comey was a prop for the Democrats. His informational tidings seemed persuasively one sided.
It left many feeling uncomfortable. A lot of indiscreet talk he disdainfully chose to repeat. A Director of the FBI is supposed to lay out the facts professionally and let others decide.
Donald Trump had the courage to fire Comey but there was never any doubt he could do that. It was a bold and decisive Trump move.
Trump didn’t fire Comey for any reason other than his belief that he had lost his ability to do his job. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod J Rosenstein advised Trump to do it.
Rod J Rosenstein, Deputy Attorney General, issued a memorandum about the firing of the FBI Director. In it he said, “The Director was wrong to usurp the Attorney General’s authority on July 5, 2015, and announce his conclusion that the case (re: Hillary’s emails) should be closed without prosecution. It is not the function of the Director to make such an announcement. At most, the Director should have said the FBI had completed its investigation and presented its findings to federal prosecutors. The Director now defends his decision by asserting that he believed Attorney General Loretta Lynch had a conflict. But the FBI Director is never empowered to supplant federal prosecutors and assume command of the Justice Department.”
Democrats naturally had a meltdown over Comey’s removal. They employ convenient talking points even when what they assert now was denied before. Many Democrats blamed Comey for Hillary’s loss but as soon as Trump terminated Comey, their objections were suddenly forgotten.
Comey resided within the DC swamp along with two other powerful men referred to as the final top tier intel black hat leakers (a self-serving person or organization, that is corrupt, deceitful, manipulative, exploitative, a bad entity working for their own power and interests) – an exclusive club that included James Clapper DNI, John Brennan CIA and now Comey FBI. All removed!
Speculation is rife that Trump fired Comey to shut down the FBI Russian/Trump investigation that is already 11 months old with no evidence to support it.
Catherine Herridge, a reporter for Fox News, reported that she was informed that, “the last straw”, for the White House, was that Comey was willing to go on with investigations about the “Russian connection” to the Trump Campaign (despite no evidence), but would not look into the actual felony of revealing (unmasking) and leaking to the press of American citizens, named by the Obama Administration.”
The Russian connection “continues to be a scandal in search of a crime.” Comey pompously disagreed!
More of Comey’s arrogance and smug certainty emerged in a speech to a Boston College audience on March 8th when he said “you’re stuck with me for another six and one half years.”
Not exactly Mr. Comey. He didn’t count on Trump’s resolve to clean the swamp.
Comey won’t be missed.
